Welding Engineer- Additive Manufacturing - BWX Technologies, Inc. - Barberton, Ohio

 

Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Materials Science & Engineering, Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with materials emphasis, or equivalent.

 

Strong theoretical understanding of metallurgy, microstructure, phase transformations, fusion welding processes, and materials behavior — especially for both ferrous and non-ferrous alloys.

 

Familiarity with additive manufacturing processes (e.g., powder-bed fusion, directed energy deposition), including powder handling, build parameter selection, post-processing, heat treatment, and material qualification.

 

Experience or coursework in process development, materials testing / characterization, microstructural analysis, non-destructive testing (NDT), mechanical testing.

 

Ability to produce clear, detailed technical documentation (procedures, process specs, build plans, test reports, inspection records).

 

Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to collaborate across disciplines (design, manufacturing, QA, inspection, R&D).

 

Hands-on experience in welding or AM operations; knowledge of powder metallurgy, metallurgy of welds and AM builds, post-build heat treatment, and quality assurance / inspection practices.

 

Experience with CAD / CAM or process-planning software, build-simulation tools, specimen testing, or materials research.

 

Good communication skills and ability to work with both engineering and production teams.

 

Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  Pay: $80,000 - $101,000

 

The base salary range for this position in Ohio (US-OH) at the start of employment is expected to be between $80,000 and $101,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
