Job Description

Reciprocity for attorneys licensed in other jurisdictions is now available under the Limited License Method for Public Employee (Criminal Law) section of Rule 1 of the Rules of the Supreme Court of Hawaii.

The County of Maui is seeking outstanding and dedicated Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys to represent our Community in criminal matters. The department is seeking applicants for entry-level positions as well as experienced litigators. As a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, you will be entrusted with a wide array of professional legal duties, managing cases from those of moderate difficulty to highly complex criminal matters. Your crucial role will involve:

  • Critically evaluating complaints to identify and address potential ethical violations and critical legal issues, ensuring adherence to the highest standards of justice.
  • Strategically preparing cases for trial , including conducting legal research, drafting motions, interviewing witnesses, and compiling evidence to build strong prosecutions.
  • Skillfully performing trials in various court settings, presenting arguments, examining witnesses, and advocating for the community's interests.
  • Providing clear and effective direction to non-attorney staff, fostering a collaborative and efficient team environment.
  • Maintaining comprehensive and organized case, file, and related records , ensuring integrity and accessibility of all legal documentation.
  • Committing to continuous growth by actively participating in training programs and professional development activities, staying abreast of legal developments and best practices.
  • Engaging with the community through participation in outreach programs and events, helping to foster public trust and understanding of the justice system.
  • Undertaking other related duties as necessary to support the department's mission and uphold the general level of the position's responsibilities.

Highly competitive salary commensurate with years of experience. Entry-level salary starts at $122,315 and top candidates licensed for nine years or more (in any jurisdiction) start at $213,466 per year. Pursuant to Rule 1 of the Rules of the Supreme Court of Hawaii (as amended on June 18, 2025), license reciprocity for Qualified Government Attorneys is NOW AVAILABLE to attorneys admitted to practice by the highest court of another state, the District of Columbia, or a territory of the United States, and whose license to practice in that jurisdiction is active, who is a graduate of a law school approved by the American Bar Association Council on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar, and who is in good standing in every jurisdiction where the attorney is licensed.
