Location: Philadelphia, PA, United States
Open Date: Jul 25, 2025
Deadline:

The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine invites applications for a faculty position in Small Animal Radiation Oncology. This position is in the Clinician Educator (CE) track of the University of Pennsylvania and at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on the candidate's experience.

The successful candidate is expected to have history of or potential as an exemplary clinician, educator, researcher and academic leader in their field. The CE faculty member is expected to contribute to their field through scholarship that brings new knowledge and advances their field. Members of faculty in the CE track in Radiation Oncology provide 29 weeks per year of clinical service in the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital and participate in the clinical and didactic teaching of veterinary students, interns, and residents. Clinical responsibilities include treatment planning (including manual, forward, and inverse planning), participation in comprehensive oncology rounds, student, nurse, and house officer instruction and mentoring, and primary care of radiation oncology patients. Both reappointment and promotion require the faculty member to meet expectations for excellence in clinical activity, teaching, and demonstration of scholarly productivity, such as in the form of original research publications in peer-reviewed journals.

This position is part of the School's Standing Faculty. It is a non-tenured position, with reappointment every three years and promotion required by year nine. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Full University benefits, including vacation time, health, dental, vision, retirement, and eligible tuition reimbursement for self, spouse, and or dependents, accompany the position. Applications are currently being accepted, and the start date is negotiable.

For this position, the successful candidate will join PennVet's existing Radiation Oncology service, which includes a Full Clinical Professor (AC track) and an Assistant Professor (CE track) of Radiation Oncology, one and half dedicated nurse-anesthetist, one Certified Veterinary Technician/service coordinator, one registered technologist in Radiation Therapy, and two specialty RO interns. The service also plans to start a radiation oncology residency program in the Fall of 2026. Advantages of the position include a Comprehensive Oncology service with dedicated medical and radiation oncologists working as a team, support from Soft Tissue Surgery, a dynamic hospital setting with a diverse, complex caseload, and excellent support staff. PennVet is an exciting intellectual environment with outstanding residents and senior clinicians, including faculty boarded in oncology, surgery, radiology, anesthesia, and clinical pathology. Facilities include a Varian Silhouette with RapidArc, OBI/CBCT, Eclipse TPS, and Aria R&V. A complete upgrade of the current radiation therapy equipment is underway. Dedicated medical physics support is provided through the University of Pennsylvania's healthcare system. Imaging modalities include a 64-slice CT and 1.5T MRI. The proximity to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Perelman School of Medicine provides ample opportunities for collaboration and consultation for unusual cases or research opportunities.

This position is particularly suited for junior faculty with an interest in both research and clinical practice, looking to build and grow a program in a multi-specialty Academic referral center with a high caseload. The Comprehensive Oncology program is ideally positioned to offer outstanding oncology services and participates in multiple oncology clinical trials. The research mission is supported by a network of faculty focusing on oncological investigations (including a board-certified/PhD immuno-oncologist), as well as dedicated centers of excellence such as the Veterinary Clinical Investigation Center () and the Penn Vet Cancer Center ().

The Ryan Veterinary Hospital at PennVet is located in a vibrant urban environment with an abundance of cultural resources, including music, art, theatres, and fine dining (), with easy access to New York and Washington DC. Additionally, for outdoor enthusiasts, Wissahickon Valley Park, Valley Forge National Park, and many more recreational amenities are within minutes of the city and are easily accessible by bicycle and public transportation.
